One of the symbols of Sardinia: the Lapwing

Our Island boasts a large number of symbols of ancient origin and today we talk to you about the Sardinian Lapwing, whose origins are far away and date back to the Byzantines.

The lapwing is one of the most recognized and significant symbols of Sardinian culture, and in the craft sector its use is very wide, such as in the decoration of wooden furniture, ceramics, textiles and jewelry.

Its symbolic meaning is to be found in the agro-pastoral culture, and like many others, it invokes fertility, rains, and the health of the flocks. Its origin can be traced back to 534 A.D. when the Byzantines arrived in Sardinia.

Originally, therefore, its presence was traditionally considered a sign of rebirth and renewal. It also portrays a symbol of elegance, thanks to its beauty and its graceful flight, and represents the beauty and uniqueness of nature.

Despite its eastern origin, it is universally recognized as "Sardinian", and in many homes in Sardinia it is easy to find at least one object that represents it.

In addition, the lapwing is associated with maternity and fertility. This connection is due to the protective behavior of the bird towards its chicks. In some areas of Sardinia, expecting women wear pendants or amulets with the symbol of the lapwing to wish for a safe pregnancy and a trouble-free birth.
