San Simplicio 2024: Tradition and Innovation

The Festival of San Simplicio, a pearl of tradition and community fervour in the beautiful setting of Olbia, will be enriched this year with innovative initiatives that promise to merge faith, culture and entertainment into an even more exciting and inclusive celebration.

From 10 to 15 May, Olbia will dress up to honour Saint Simplicius, its beloved patron saint, with a series of events ranging from the sacred to the profane, bearing witness to the rich culture of Gallura. The festivity, called 'Mesu Maju', will be inaugurated with the traditional fireworks on the seafront, followed by the blessing of the ex-voto flags, moments of deep spiritual and community significance.

One of the most eagerly awaited events is the 'Simplician Conference' commemorating the 1,720th anniversary of the Saint's death, scheduled for 12 May in the Basilica of San Simplicio. With the participation of prominent figures such as the archbishop of Sassari and the commander of Olbia's Guardia di Finanza, the conference promises in-depth reflections on the history and legacy of Olbia's proto-veschop.

The Palio della Stella, with its challenge between horsemen from twenty-six Gallura municipalities, will bring colour and tradition to the city streets, strengthening ties with the region's historical and social identity.

The culinary offer will be another highlight of the festival, with the Olbia Mussels Festival on 11 May, which will invite visitors to taste local delicacies accompanied by the excellent Vermentino di Monti wine. A rich programme of concerts, featuring artists from Raf to Collage, and the folk and ethnic melodies of Maria Luisa Congiu, will brighten the evenings of residents and visitors alike.

The highlight of the festival will be the procession of Saint Simplicius on 15 May, followed by the solemn pontifical mass outside, presided over for the first time by the bishop of the diocese in honour of the patron saint. This profound moment of devotion will culminate with an evocative procession through the church square, testifying to the continuity of a faith that is renewed and handed down from generation to generation.

This year, the Festival of San Simplicio not only celebrates a legacy of faith and tradition, but also looks to the future, enriching its programme with initiatives involving both young and long-standing believers, making Olbia a shining example of how tradition and innovation can go hand in hand.
