St Anthony's fire: tradition in Sardinia

The fire festival of Sant'Antonio Abate is one of the most heartfelt traditions in Sardinia, celebrated on 16 and 17 January in many villages on the island. This event intertwines religious rites and ancient popular traditions linked to fire, a symbol of purification and protection.
Fire Traditions
The lighting of the bonfires is the central moment of the feast. After the blessing, the faithful make three laps around the fire reciting prayers, a gesture that symbolises a request for protection for the year to come. The evening continues with songs, traditional dances and convivial moments that unite community and visitors.
Typical sweets: Cuzzuleddas and more
An unmissable element of the festival is the tasting of typical Sardinian sweets, such as cuzzuleddas, made with simple ingredients but with an authentic flavour. Alongside these, other sweets such as pabassinas, bread and saba and a good glass of cannonau wine are often served to warm up the atmosphere.
