Digital nomads: who they are and new regulations in Italy

The phenomenon of digital nomads is expanding globally. But who exactly are these digital nomads? They are often highly qualified young people, professionals, entrepreneurs and employees of large companies, especially multinationals and non-governmental organisations, who work without a fixed base. They live by travelling the world, choosing their destinations according to personal preferences, family needs and fiscal and administrative benefits.

Countries such as Portugal, Spain, Malaysia, Malta, Greece, Hungary, Brazil and the Czech Republic, as well as Thailand, already offer advantageous conditions to attract these workers.

Now Italy could also join this list thanks to the new Nomad Digital Visa, designed to attract highly skilled workers. Among Italian destinations, Sardinia stands out as an ideal destination for these itinerant professionals.

Nomad Digital Visa

The Ministry of the Interior approved the implementing decree on 29 February 2024, published in the Official Gazette on 4 April 2024, which makes the Nomad Digital Visa legislation operational. This visa aims to attract skilled non-EU workers, allowing them to enter Italy outside the entry quotas established by the flow decrees.

What is needed to apply for the Nomad Digital Visa?

To apply for this visa, the following requirements are necessary

- Have a minimum annual income of approximately €28,000, increased in the case of family dependents.

- Have health insurance valid on the national territory.

- Demonstrate the availability of accommodation in Italy.

- Absence of criminal charges in the last five years.

- Experience of at least six months in the performance of one's work activity or present an employment or collaboration contract.

Advantages of Sardinia for digital nomads

Sardinia, with its enchanting beaches, Mediterranean climate and quality of life, is an ideal choice for digital nomads. The region offers a variety of landscapes, from the unspoilt coastline to the inland mountains, providing a relaxed and stimulating environment for those working remotely.

Infrastructure and Amenities

Sardinia is well connected to the rest of Italy and Europe by direct flights and ferries. Moreover, the island is constantly improving its digital infrastructure, offering high-speed Internet connections and increasing availability of coworking spaces.

Practical aspects

Life in Sardinia is relatively cheaper than in other destinations for digital nomads in Europe. This, combined with the natural beauty and the new facilities for obtaining a Nomad Digital Visa, makes the island a very attractive option. The procedures for obtaining a visa are simple and well-structured, with short waiting times and efficient administrative support.

With these new regulations, Italy hopes to become an attractive destination for digital nomads, offering not only unique natural and cultural beauty, but also a favourable fiscal and administrative environment. Sardinia, with its natural charm and relaxed lifestyle, could become a favourite destination for these global workers.
